employees were held inside company headquarters in september of 2010 by an armed man. this week a montgomery county police officer was among those honored for his role in getting that scary situation under control. news 4 s tracee wilkins was at the awards ceremony and had this report. reporter: on september 1st, 2010, lives were saved inside of the discovery building inside silver spring. there were a lot of people who contributed to the outcome of that day, and today one of them was honored. amazed not just by his bravery but his instincts, what he did. and that reflects the character and quality of the individual but also the training of the institution here in montgomery county. reporter: the officer was actually off duty when the call came. he said he quickly went back on duty and instincts kicked in. being able to gain access to the building by some of the discovery employees that recognized me. from there, i was eight to get a tactical advantage coming up from

good morning, i m tom kierein. at reagan national, 35 cold degrees. does feel like a winter month again after that balmy saturday. chilldown yesterday and it s continued to be chilly this morning. under the cloud cover, we ve had a few sprinkles across the bay and the eastern shore. now there s been a few flurries in the air. not enough for any schools to delay or cancel. that s in the central shenandoah valley, that area of gray and pink you see on the radar to the west. areas of green and blue are sprinkles of light rain, maybe it a little sleet. scattered light areas of that pulling east of stafford into charles, st. mary s, southern calvert and the eastern shore. and temperatures right now are cold. upper 20s to around 30s. low to mid 30s near the chesapeake bay and tidal potomac. a small chance of sleet but a greater chance of light rain this afternoon and chilly. highs only in the low 40s. that may continue into the evening. a look at that in ten minutes. danella has

on the roadways. give yourself a little extra time. outside right now to talk more about it, we have shomari stone still seeing a few flakes there. reporter: right now that snow is coming down. it s relatively light. however, i tell you, over the last 30 minutes or so it was picking up a little bit. you come right over here a lot of drivers we actually found this woman. she was driving around with this snow covering her back windshield. i told her to stop and i would actually clean it for her. this is a good investment right here. i got it around $8 at a drug store. i tell you one thing. it s worth having one of these. let s roll video to show you what it s like on the roads. we drove around and haven t seen a lot of accumulation but the pavement, you know, temperatures injure the lower 40s. and this is a good thing for a lot of drivers. we drove around and it was slippery. you definitely want to don t want to be out here. moments ago i talked to a woman and she explains
