Local elections are set to take place across the country on May 6. In Copeland, this will mean elections for the office of Police and Crime Commissioner, a borough council by-election for the Whitehaven Central ward, and potentially county council elections as well. However, in light of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, a number of locations normally used as polling stations have been suggested as unsuitable, and alternatives have been proposed.

A yellow weather warning, issued by the Met Office, remains in place for snow and ice today (February 2), with the entire county included. And overnight, the frost has set in for many, with areas including Brampton, Arlecdon, Wigton, Caldbeck and Keswick waking up to a blanket of snow. The Cumbria County Council weather station cameras show snowy conditions covering the roads, and road users should be wary and careful while out.
Nancy Weston celebrates her 100th birthday with cards, flowers, messages from family and friends, a memory DVD and a telegram from the Queen A Workington woman who has just turned 100 has thanked family for her longevity. Nancy Weston, who celebrated the milestone birthday on January 9, said she is: “a very lucky woman’’ as she: “had the best parents in the world” and “has a wonderful family”. She was absolutely delighted with her telegram from the Queen and said: Never did I think I would reach this age and it s all thanks to my family. Maud Wilson, registered manager of The Fairways, Workington, where Nancy lives, said that despite having a lockdown birthday Nancy has been overwhelmed by the gifts cards and flowers that she has received.
