Tumbling Shoals, 1910: The small community near Greers Ferry also marks a recreational area on the massive lake that took away the once free-flowing Little Red River. "We will be here another week. Papa s little buds are enjoying the outing." The card shows a horse drawn wagon on the river bank.
Heber Springs, 1914: "Spent last week at this place." The Hotel Adrian was built in 1908 of cut stone and brick, with a porch wrapping around two sides of the building. In promotions it listed: "elegant appointments, a lovely lobby and two parlors." For its fate, see Friday s feature.
St. Francis River, circa 1908: The river flows out of northeast Arkansas and empties into the Mississippi above Helena. Before the massive clearing of bottom land hardwoods, it was a wildlife paradise. Still today, it provides good fishing areas.
Mena, circa 1910: "Saw these oxen run away." The card was sent to California. The Ouachita Mountains are misspelled, as was not uncommon. Oxen were important in an era when roads were quite rough.
Heber, circa 1908: What became Heber Springs in 1910 was simply Heber before, named for Dr. Heber Jones of Memphis who was responsible for bringing the area’s springs to prominence. The depot was built by the M&NA (Missouri and North Arkansas) railroad.
