The pursuit continued into Arkansas, involving officers from Tonitown and Springdale. When the U-Haul reached Interstate 49 in Springdale near Exit 70, Tontitown Police Chief Corey Jenison hit the van in order to stop it.
“He quickly located the child, crawled onto the ice, and pulled the child to safety with the help of Lt. Shon Morris and members of the Jonesboro Fire Department,” officials said.
Early evidence indicates that the suspect resisted arrest and fired on the deputy, who was found mortally wounded by officers who responded to reports of shots fired.
The indictment and an earlier sworn statement by an FBI agent say the sheriff tried to get federal agents to stop investigating a drug dealer who had provided the sheriff with methamphetamine.
