Ghani fires finance minister, appoints caretaker to the position

(Last Updated On: January 23, 2021) President Ashraf Ghani on Saturday dismissed finance minister Abdul Hadi Arghandiwal from his post and approved a new acting minister, said the Administrative Office of the President (AOP) in a statement. The AOP cited a number of reasons for this move including the delay in the collection of taxes, weak management, lack of commitment to good governance, not obeying Article 77 of the Constitution, violating Presidential decrees and directions, the lack of cooperation in an assessment of illegal appointments at the ministry and for trying to prevent the assessments, the statement read. The AOP added that Ghani approved Mohammad Khalid Payenda as acting finance minister.

Bamiyan youth take to the slopes in first skiing contest of the season

(Last Updated On: January 16, 2021) Dozens of men and women took part in Friday’s Peace and Friendship Cup ski challenge at the Shahid Mazari slope in Bamiyan province.  Organized by the Eagle Sports Club and the Sports Directorate of Bamiyan province, the aim of the contest was to promote peace and friendship.  According to Afzal Noori, the head of Eagle Sports Club, more than 60 athletes participated in three categories, including eight women, in the first ski contest of 2021. Winners were Zahra Noori in the women’s section, Mujtaba in the youth category and  Mohammad Amin in the teenager section. Hundreds of spectators also braved the icy weather to watch the competitors taken on the slope in the foothills of Baba mountain close to Bamiyan city. 

12 local police killed in Taliban attack in Herat

(Last Updated On: January 16, 2021) At least 12 members of Afghan local police were killed in an attack by Taliban “infiltrators” in Herat province, local officials confirmed Saturday. Herat police spokesman Abdul Ahad Walidaza said the incident occurred on Friday night in Ghorian district. According to Walizada a delegation has arrived in the area to investigate the incident. So far the Taliban has not commented. Earlier sources in Herat province said three Taliban infiltrators killed at least 12 members of the local uprising forces, took their weapons, ammunition and fled the area. Sources added that Taliban infiltrators had joined the force three nights ago.

(Last Updated On: December 31, 2020) The Trump administration is reportedly declassifying as-yet uncorroborated intelligence, that claims China offered to pay non-state actors in Afghanistan to attack US forces, two senior administration officials tell Axios. The Chinese embassy in Washington DC did not respond to a request for comment by Axios and according to the report outgoing President Donald Trump is not believed to have discussed the matter with China’s President Xi Jinping. It was not immediately clear whether any members of Congress or President-elect Joe Biden have been briefed, though Biden now has access to the President’s Daily Brief.
