Incumbent mayor of winstonsalem for the mayors job, James Lee Knox has just lost the support of his local Republican Party. The forsythe county Republican Party has announced that they no longer support James Lee Knox in his bid to become the next mayor of winstonsalem. This comes after mr. Knox admitted using with the local paper describes as several derogatory terms including the n word in a confrontation with a local elections worker last year. Mr. Knox acknowledged that he used the racial slur after the 2012 election. He said he was trying to find out the name of a black elections employee with whom he had exchanged words during early voting. During a conversation with another county worker, mr. Knox referred to the woman using several derogatory terms including the n word. Mr. Knox says he does not believe in using such words but that he, quote, got frustrated. Thats how he explains it. Because its election day 2013, an odd number, which makes this an off year election. And well, to be honest, we tend not to get too excited about off year elections if voter turnout is any indication. In fact, its not uncommon for voter turnout percentages in some off year state and local elections to be in the single digits. And thats among people who live in the jurisdictions that will be directly impacted by the outcomes of those elections. Given the level of disinterest among people who actually have to live with the consequences of off year elections, finding a reason to care about the electoral politics of a state where you dont live is probably asking a lot. Challengers say that the law only provides that subsidy on the state exchanges, not the federal one. And now the Supreme Court has agreed to answer that question of which way it actually which way what the words of the statute mean. What does the law provide . Thats an interesting thing, pete, because were talking about the words used and if they can be ordered to be interpreted different from the way the law put forward meant it. Is it unusual for the Supreme Court to take a case where the law that put the side forward is telling the country what it intended but just the linguistics are in question . No, because the word of the law are ultimately what count. Everybody agrees on that.
