DVIDS - News - Alaska avalanche survivor meets with, thanks Arctic Guardian rescue team

13 A week from graduating high school, Peter Schutt was physically on top of the world as he climbed Donoho Peak near the Alaska/Canada border. Unfortunately, Schutt’s adventure took a dangerous turn when an avalanche struck. Snow that was once a fixture on the frigid face of the mountain suddenly cut loose and turned into a freight train of cold, sugary crystals stampeding in rapid, unstoppable motion. Schutt said the avalanche pitched him over a 75-foot cliff on his tumble down 2,500 feet of the jagged mountain face. He remembers covering his head as best he could to prevent further injury.

A six-year period was looked at from 2013-2019.

Posted: Tuesday, April 13, 2021 12:00 More than a dozen Canadian Coast Guard officials are taking part in an international online exercise simulating a joint search and rescue and environmental response operation following a collision between an expedition cruise ship and an oil tanker off the northern coast of Iceland. The Arctic Guardian 2021 exercise, which began Monday and runs through Wednesday, brings together representatives of all eight Arctic countries: Canada, Finland, Iceland, Denmark, Norway, Russia, Sweden and the United States. It is organized by the Emergency Prevention, Preparedness and Response (EPPR) Working Group of the Arctic Council and the Arctic Coast Guard Forum (ACGF). Iceland, which is the outgoing chair of both the Arctic Council and the ACGF, hosts the multinational exercise.
