A woman three months pregnant questioned if her first hike of the year should be so steep.  All three birders joined more than a dozen others who came to hike Saddleback Mountain in search of the Bicknell’s thrush, a bird that breeds only in the boreal forest and only more than 3,000 feet above sea level. The species was the featured star in the four-day Rangeley Birding Festival two weeks ago with three half-day hikes offered to try to find it.

Brianna Soukup/Staff Photographer RANGELEY Tracey Russell stepped away from the photo she was taking with her parents and children in front of the Saddleback lodge, their smiles obvious though hidden by face masks. And, as she stopped to reflect on this long-awaited family gathering, she choked up. “I’m sorry,” she said. “Today was the first day we’ve been able to hug my parents in a year.” That memorable pandemic moment, Russell said, was made all the sweeter because it happened at the family’s favorite ski mountain.
