Alachua County’s COVID-19 vaccination rate is stalling, more cases are occurring and hospitals are admitting more patients as the virus continues to frustrate health officials. UF Health CEO Ed Jimenez said Shands Hospital is dealing with more cases. The new patients are a change from those who flooded the hospital when the pandemic began last year. “Patients are younger this time around than the first time, so that’s a little different,” Jimenez said. “The other thing is we’re seeing a number of people who are not vaccinated getting sick.” North Florida Regional Medical Center is also experiencing a rise in coronavirus cases but not to the level it was earlier this year, said spokeswoman Lauren Lettelier.
