The Archbishop of Kampala Archdiocese Dr Cyprian Kizito Lwanga’s last words to the nation were full of encouragement and an appeal to government to stop the state inspired kidnappings, torture and killings especially of members of the opposition.
Lwanga was found dead inside his residence at Lubaga on Saturday morning, according to the secretary general of the Episcopal Conference Monsignor John Baptist Kauta.
His death was announced just hours after Lwanga, who also doubled as the chairperson of the Uganda Joint Christian Council (UJCC) preached a message of hope for Uganda after jointly leading the Ecumenical Public Way of the Cross with his Anglican counterpart Dr Stephen Kaziimba at Namirembe on Friday.

Kampala Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago has been evacuated from Lubaga Cathedral after collapsing during the mass to commemorate the life of former Kampala Archbishop Dr. Cyprian Lwanga.
Lukwago, who was seated in the area reserved for VIPs, was lifted by two men and evacuated through the door linking to the priest’s residence shortly after collapsing in his chair today afternoon. Lwanga was found dead in his bedroom on Saturday morning, a day after participating in the way of the cross.
A postmortem report has indicated that Lwanga suffered ischemic heart disease leading to coronary artery thrombosis. His personal doctor Andrew Sekitoleko says he suffered a blood clot in one of the arteries leading to the heart.

On April 2, the country had watched the archbishop join other Christian leaders in a Way of the Cross procession in St. Paul s Anglican Cathedral. The activity had been organized by the Uganda Joint Christian Council, an ecumenical grouping of Catholic, Anglican and Orthodox Churches.
