In 1942, Japanese aviator Nobuo Fujita dropped incendiary bombs on the forest surrounding Brookings, Oregon. His intention: set the Siskiyou National Forest afire, creating a massive distraction from the war effort. Fujita’s act was one of the very few and very covered up attacks on the mainland United States during World War II.
Under Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s direction, the U.S. hushed this news to keep up war optimism. This may have been a lost historical artifact but for the Brookings Junior Chamber International chapter. The Jaycees served themselves and their creed by inviting Fujita to town in 1962.
