During the briefing, i received a telephone call from the fema administrator as well as the secretary of Homeland Security. Talked, in the phone call, about more ways in which the state of texas will be collaborating with fema and with the federal government. That will be part of the material i cover today. We had a long briefing that i will like to break out in a lot of detail because, as you know, there is a lot going on. I will be discussing what is going on in houston, but also covering the ongoing challenges we are dealing with in other parts of the state. Let me start with the weather. You all probably know at have seen a letter briefings about the weather. One thing we are dealing with is basically a triangle of ongoing rain. If you do it or attempt to do it and its not coordinated, not done right, you are literally putting people in harms way, and you are creating a far worse situation. What we see is that when an individual, regardless of the immigration status is afraid of calling 911 because they dont know if by calling 911 they will be arrested and put into deportation proceedings, then all of us are harmed. That means that all of our Public Safety is undermined. If theyre afraid of corroborating with the police because of the immigration status, that means that that crime will not be solved because that person is afraid of coming forward.
