arab spring and, of course, the arab winter. what we need is a good deal of flexibility. we need to inject some consistency into our principles and make sure that our policy, to the extent possible, reflects those principles. but the situation in the middle east is simply too varied. example, bahrain repressed their people. we haven t given a gadhafi must go speech. yemen where counterterrorism is king uses violence to stay in many power. we haven t given an alabama dull la abdullah saleh must go speech. jenna: why haven t wesome is. because it conflicts with our interest. if you had a one size fits all policy, you d end up in a situation in which america would not be able to protect its interests and get any mileage out of its value. we can t let the perfect become the enemy of the good on this one. i ll give you another example.
