Sudan's troubled Darfur region is seeing a disturbing rise in violence between nomadic Arab militias and farmers from the Massalit community. In one of the biggest recent incidents, more than 200 people were killed in revenge attacks in West Darfur state.
"There are too many weapons in the hands of civilians," says Suliman Baldo, founder of the Sudan Transparency and Policy Tracker. "Until there is a consistent campaign to disarm civilians," he told DW, "the government will sadly not be able to contain this monster, which is of its own creation."
