San Marcos police investigate gunshots reports at apartment complexes

San Marcos police are investigating gunshots reports at four separate apartment complexes over the weekend, and are asking for the public’s help in identifying the people involved, authorities said.  The incidents appear to be part of a string of shootings in the area over the last several months. In previous cases, authorities have responded to reports of weapons being fired in public places, particularly at late night parties at local apartment complexes, city officials have said.  In October, San Marcos responded to nearly a dozen separate calls for weapons being fired. Texas State University police and San Marcos police have continued to encourage residents and students to avoid such parties.

Now, the state legislature is working to make the city s mermaid roots official. A designation to make San Marcos the mermaid capital of Texas is expected to be voted on by Texas representatives around March. The official arrival of the title is long-awaited by many San Marcos natives, given the influence the mythical creature has had on the community. It s not official yet; it is on its way, says July Moreno, founder of the nonprofit Mermaid Society of Texas which seeks to unite the San Marcos community by celebrating arts, culture, heritage and fostering river guardianship.
