Improved
transport connections for South Auckland are
here.
Minister of Transport Michael Wood and Auckland
Mayor Phil Goff officially opened the long-awaited upgraded
Puhinui Station in Papatoetoe this morning.
A public
open day then saw hundreds of people through the doors to
check out the stunning $69M architecturally-designed
facility.
From this Monday – there will be faster,
more frequent and easier connections to Auckland Airport –
with the new station providing connections to the electric
AirportLink bus fleet.
Closed off for construction
since September 2019, the fully-staffed station now includes
new escalators, stairs and large lifts to accommodate
customers with luggage.
“Thanks to a partnership with mana whenua, which involved Te Ākitai Waiohua providing design leadership, we’ve now got an amazing station that will create key connections into Auckland Airport from all over Tāmaki Makaurau,” he said. Auckland mayor Phil Goff and Transport Minister Michael Wood attended the public open day to cut the ribbon and officially open the interchange.

Auckland mayor Phil Goff and Transport Minister Michael Brown attended Puhinui Station on Saturday to cut the ribbon. But bus and rail services will not begin operating until Monday. Electric AirportLink buses will run ever 10 minutes from Puhinui Station, giving commuters a public transport option to connect to the airport.

Fast forward three years and $600,000 worth of upgrades and Toetoe-roa/Cooper Park now has a shiny yellow and red playground, upgraded basketball and volleyball courts, a mini pump track and a picnic area.
But such a project is an exception to the norm.
According to a council-commissioned report in 2018, despite 25 percent of Auckland s children living in the southern parts of the city, only 16 percent of the city s play equipment was located there. Furthermore, playgrounds in Mt Albert and Mt Eden were found to have an average of five pieces of equipment per facility, whereas playgrounds in South Auckland only have three.
