Whether it’s fake online shopping sites, identity theft or scam artists using phone or email, fraud is on the rise, with a record 1.3 million cases in the first nine months of 2020, according to the Federal Trade Commission.
Although anyone can become a victim,
FTC data show that consumers age 80 and older are far more likely to be scammed by phone and lose the most money, a median of $1,250. “Even if you do everything perfectly, you can still be susceptible to fraud,” says Shameka Walker, a fraud and identity theft program manager for the FTC.
By now, you probably know not to give out sensitive information to anyone contacting you and that credit cards offer more protection against fraud than debit cards. With a credit card, the most you’ll be responsible for is $50.

Trenton Withdrawal
(Trenton) â A group studying school funding in Trenton has urged the town to withdraw from AOS 91 which includes the four towns on Mt. Desert Island. The Ellsworth American reports the townâs School Evaluation Options Committee made its recommendation to the Board of Selectmen this week, and also urged the Trenton School Committee to take a no confidence vote against the superintendent of schools.   The group is not an official town government committee, and says it is looking for ways to try to save money on education costs.

(Bar Harbor) â Mt. Desert Island High School says some teachers and students are isolating after they were in close contact with someone who tested positive for Coronavirus. WVII-TV reports high school families got an e-mail from Principal Matt Haney saying he expects school to reopen as normal on Monday. He did not identify the infected person
