The flood-battered Eastern Cape province is in for a bleak time after finance minister Enoch Gondongwana allocated only R1bn for disaster response nationally in his budget speech. The province said it would need at least R4.5bn to repair infrastructure damaged in floods earlier this month and that was before the most recent downpour, when Coffee Bay's bridge was washed away.
Higher education and training minister Blade Nzimande has not bowed down to threats of legal action by axed Buffalo City College council chair Dr Bongumusa Zuma. Now the two are headed for a court showdown after Nzimande refused to budge on his demand that he overturn his decision to sack Zuma as a member of the council and its chair.
The Eastern Cape government has turned to the army for help in repairing vital infrastructure after devastating rains and floods left at least 10 people dead and four missing.
Ousted Buffalo City College council chair Dr Bonga Zuma is fighting to get his job back after being sacked by higher education and training minister Blade Nzimande. Zuma was fired by Nzimande on Tuesday last week after a wrangle over the appointment of an acting principal at the college, which was in turmoil in 2022 because of fallout between the council chair and disgruntled staff members.
