THE recent road rage incident involving a cyclist and a motorist (a dismissed former policeman) along a painted bicycle lane offers an important road safety lesson. In the absence of physical barriers to separate motor vehicles and bicycles, cyclists are endangered by motor vehicles that enter the bike lane. If we want to avoid similar incidents, road designs should prevent motor vehicles from mixing in the same space as bicycles.
