In the following days, DOC received several more reports of a whale swimming close to shore from people in Parapara, Milnthorpe and Collingwood. On Wednesday morning, Ogle got a call to say a whale had stranded at Ferry Point, near the Aorere River mouth. “When we got there it was clearly dead and had been that way for quite a few hours, so it probably died in the early hours of Wednesday morning.”

The baleen whale was found dead on the beach but appeared to be in good condition. Ogle said DOC was unsure of the cause of death, which could often be challenging to determine.
Dixon said the last time she had been on that stretch of beach was to see the Hale-Bopp Comet in the late 1990s. “I haven’t actually walked down there since then and just by chance there is another spectacular event going on.” There had been reports of a whale seen swimming from Parapara and Collingwood over the last few days.
Jane Dixon In February, 49 pilot whales stranded at Farewell Spit, which is known for mass strandings. They were refloated by members of whale rescue group Project Jonah, Department of Conservation staff and members of the public. The next morning, 28 surviving whales were found and successfully refloated.
