CQ mining town cancels Anzac Day march over red tape

Premium Content Subscriber only A Central Queensland mining town has called off its Anzac Day march this year because of too much paperwork and red tape - with other areas expected to follow suit. But a state government spokesman has said all Anzac Day services could proceed as normal pre-COVID. Blackwater/Bluff RSL Sub branch president Lester Anderson said the march in Blackwater and Bluff was cancelled, but the dawn services would go ahead as usual at 4.25am for Blackwater and 5.30am for Bluff. There will be another 9am service for Blackwater. Mr Anderson said the decision was made because the branch was informed it would have four pages of instructions to comply with if the march went ahead.

Mackay Anzac Day services: What you need to know

Mackay Mayor Greg Williamson confirmed on Tuesday the city’s dawn services and march would resume and there would be no ticketing systems or caps on attendance. “I think the premier and the chief health officer have listened to Queenslanders and listened to the feedback they’ve been getting from communities like ours,” Cr Williamson said. “Right now, we’re in full planning for a normal Anzac Day commemoration.” This planning was carried out under the chief health officer’s directives at the time, but this has since changed given the premier’s announcement. Cr Williamson said he was pleased to see the State Government had taken on board communities’ opinions on the important day.

Fears Mackay Anzac Day Dawn Service, march will be scrapped

Mackay Regional Council is exploring plans to ensure Anzac services can be held in some form this year. The Anzac Day march and dawn service will be cancelled, while the 9.30am service at Jubilee Park will be livestreamed with a cap on numbers under the current plan the council is exploring. A joint organising committee of the council and RSL behind this year s service is awaiting further advice from the State Government on whether other options can be considered. Mackay Mayor Greg Williamson said any plans for Anzac commemorations would be in accordance with the Chief Health Officer s directives. Cr Williamson said while he understood comments comparing Anzac services to football games and protest rallies in terms of crowd sizes, the council was bound by the CHO directives in terms of planning events.
