Unopposed candidates David Bruen and Darnelle Stinfort will become president and vice president of Syracuse University’s Student Association, respectively, the organization’s Board of Elections and Membership chair confirmed Friday.
Bruen and Stinfort still needed 10% of the SU student body to vote in the election for their victory to be legitimate. SA had recorded 10.2% voter turnout as of Friday, Board of Elections and Membership Chair Brendan Treloar confirmed in an email to The Daily Orange.

After the first day of voting, candidates for Student Association leadership have received less than half the votes cast last year by the same time.
As of Monday night, about 2.1% of the student population had cast their votes in the election, which includes the first president and vice president campaign to run unopposed since 2015. After the first day of voting last year, about 4.9% of students had voted. The election needs at least 10% of students to vote for the results to be valid.

Throughout her campaign for Student Association comptroller, Nyah Jones was surprised to learn how little students knew about SA’s Finance Board.
“It was alarming how many didn’t know what comptroller or Finance Board was. It’s their money,” Jones said. “I was just shocked to find how many people didn’t know what it was.”

The candidates for Student Association president, vice president and comptroller addressed students’ questions at a town hall Thursday.
David Bruen and Darnelle Stinfort are running unopposed for SA president and vice president, respectively. This is the first time an SA presidential ticket has gone unopposed since 2015.
Bruen and Stinfort discussed their policy plans at the town hall, which SA hosted with CitrusTV. The pair also answered questions regarding their stances on transparency from the Department of Public Safety and when to lift COVID-19 restrictions on campus.
