Councillor Barrie Cooper A FORMER policeman has been welcomed back to a council’s top team after a stormy week at Middlesbrough Town Hall. Middlesbrough Mayor Andy Preston saw five of his leadership team walk out following a bombshell open letter from the group saying they had lost confidence in him. The independent mayor strongly denied allegations about his conduct and behaviour levelled against him by former deputy mayor Antony High and four other councillors from the Middlesbrough Independent Group. On Thursday evening, the “white smoke” emerged on a new appointment to the Middlesbrough Council executive team – with former member for children’s services, Cllr Barrie Cooper, confirmed in a new role.

Middlesbrough mayor Andy Preston THE mayor of Middlesbrough has issued another statement responding to a series of explosive allegations made yesterday. Middlesbrough Council was thrown into disarray yesterday after five executive members resigned, after publishing a letter detailing a number of allegations about mayor Andy Preston. Mr Preston has refuted all of the claims, describing them as completely untrue . This morning, he issued a second statement In today s statement he said: Yesterday some complete lies were written and shared. It’s completely wrong that I have to respond to allegations put forward without evidence - but I will respond because I’ve got nothing to hide and I’m shocked and hurt by these unnecessary slurs
