Container shortage in South Africa

Container shortage in South Africa Port problems in Cape Town and a lack of containers arriving cause issues for table grape and other exporters Related Articles Almost exactly one year after major disruptions to exports through the port of Cape Town, and other ports in the country, exporters are facing new challenges. This time the problem is getting enough export containers into the country to meet demand, and moving them to the intended destinations. It is therefore not only Western Cape exporters who are likely to be affected. Shipping sources have said there is a worldwide shortage of containers and vessels to transport the fruit to preferred markets.

Optimism as SA s late table grape crop is rushed to markets

Optimism as SA’s late table grape crop is rushed to markets Roughly 95% of South Africa’s table grape crop is exported, and as a result, the current delay experienced in harvesting has resulted in a rush to get the fruit to the markets in time for the Festive Season. This was according to Willem Bestbier, CEO of the South African Table Grape Industry (SATI), who said the delay in harvesting was due to fruit ripening later after a long winter and exceptionally cool spring and early summer. “It will put strain on the logistics [value chain], particularly [at] our ports, but these potential strains and bottlenecks are currently [being] attended to very well.”
