Norma Mngoma: Gigaba s estranged wife returns to State Capture Inquiry

Norma Mngoma – the estranged wife of former government Minister Malusi Gigaba – has returned to the State Capture Commission for another instalment of what is arguably the corruption saga’s most scandalous subplot. Mngoma hung her husband out to dry when she last appeared at the commission, providing the commission and its Chair, Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, with jaw-dropping accounts of the couple’s extensive dealings with the Gupta family during his time in government.  Affidavit details scrutinised   Evidence leader Anton Myburgh kicked-off his examination of Mngoma by clarifying several parts of her initial affidavit, which her council had told the commission needed amending.

Gama once again appeared at the state capture inquiry, saying it was also a coincidence that he and Gupta lieutenant Salim Essa were in Dubai at the same time. It ended a week of testimony which included President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Salomé Fischer In a brief afternoon session of the Zondo Commission on Friday, former Transnet group CEO Siyabonga Gama said he was not, and could not have been, aware of all the loans Transnet had in its book, particularly those it had with Trillian leading the arrangements. The line of questioning from commission evidence leader advocate Anton Myburgh focused on lucrative contracts at Transnet for the provision of locomotives as well as companies linked to the Gupta family that received massive paydays from such contracts. Trillian formed one third of a trifecta of companies, including McKinsey and Regiments Capital, which were able to amass amounts of more than R3 billion in contracts they received from Transnet, often with no evidence of any work done.

Gama continued his testimony before the state capture inquiry on Friday where he was asked questions related to evidence presented by Gigaba’s estranged wife, Norma Mngoma. Mngoma testified last week that Gigaba told her in 2016 that he intended to speak to Gama about appointing his sister at Transnet.
