20. The Sarong, Asia
Adopting local dress, as a tourist, can be a problematic concept. I’m not thinking about accusations of cultural appropriation, though I guess that could be an issue, more the almost inevitable risk of looking faintly ridiculous. If there is an exception to the rule, however, it is the sarong and its close cousin, the lungi, which must surely be – after the T-shirt – the most popular sartorial souvenir of all.
