East Lansing, Mich. – Every week, Sports Illustrated s Spartan Nation takes a deep dive into the State of Michigan State Athletics.
Today, Spartan Nation publisher Hondo S. Carpenter, Sr., and Spartan Nation senior writer Jon Schopp discuss what s next for MSU football.
Entering the 2021 NFL Draft, Michigan State featured three prospects in cornerback Shakur Brown, defensive tackle Naquan Jones, and linebacker Antjuan Simmons.
Brown was the most likely candidate to be selected by a pro team but to no avail. For the first time in eight decades, the Spartans didn t have a single-player taken in the draft.

No Michigan State football players were selected in the NFL Draft this past weekend, ending an impressive 80-year run. The sharp drop-off in recruiting toward the end of the 2010s has been noticeable on the field the last two seasons and became even more visible during recent drafts.
Cornerback Shakur Brown appeared to have the best chance to hear his name called, while defensive tackle Naquan Jones and linebacker Antjuan Simmons were seen as long shots. Brown quickly signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers following the draft, while Jones landed with the Tennessee Titans. Simmons is still awaiting his NFL fate as of press time, but all three look to prove themselves in 2021 after going undrafted.

The 2021 NFL draft is over and so is a source of pride for Michigan State.
The Spartans’ run of having at least one player selected in the NFL draft was snapped at 80 straight years with zero picks in this year’s draft, which ended on Saturday. The last time they didn’t have a player drafted was 1940.
Heading into this year’s draft, Michigan State had the third-longest draft streak in the nation behind Michigan and USC. The Wolverines and Trojans both extended their streaks to 83 straight years.

The Spartans didn’t have a player selected in the 2021 NFL draft – the first time since 1940 that happened – but that won’t stop players from pursuing a professional career. And it didn’t take long for former Michigan State players to find teams after the drafted ended on Saturday night.
