cbs s ed o keefe is traveling with the president. he joins us now live from paris, and ed, what have we learned? reporter: norah, good evening. as you said, the president here now at the start of a five-day visit to france. the secret service says this incident is having no effect on his movements, and the fbi is monitoring the situation. reports say the explosion occurred monday afternoon at a hotel near the charles de gaulle airport outside paris. french prosecutors have opened a case against an unnamed 26-year-old suspect who is originally from the russian-occupied donbas region of ukraine. reports say the suspect is recovering from injuries sustained in monday s blast and is cooperating with police. french media reports guns and false passports were also found. the incident comes ahead of the d-day commemorations ahead of a major military parade for the president s state visit scheduled for saturday and a little more than a month before the summer olympics begin here in
there s heavy many wounded, unfortunately they are in the 200s, occupied with fighting. alex marquardt, if you can hear me, just jump in, we re able to take you whenever you re ready to talk to us. alex, are you there? don, i can hear you. what do you got for us, what s happening? reporter: well, as you very accurately described, just in the past few moments, not one but several burst of gunfire. the reason you were able to hear it down the line, that we were able to hear it, having just stepped inside, was that it really was quite loud. that was not small arms fire. that appeared to be some kind of antiaircraft fire. i came out here as soon as we started hearing it and looking at out into the sky. you can see the trace-arounds going up.
battle taking place. you are in odesa. what was happening there? reporter: yes. antiaircraft fire for 20, 30 minutes, the longest bursts we have heard since woe got here almost three weeks ago when the invasion began. clearly, there is increased military activity around here, the third largest city and most think russia has to make some move against if it wishes to feel it might have a chance to claim control overall of ukraine. that has had two russian planes taken down in the last 24 hours and shelling of the coastline. a statement, the last one backed up by defense officials who say there is military activity out there in the black sea. behind me, the longer term fear, some sort of am fish ous assault against this russian speaking heart of ukraine, it seems almost preposterous but it is
second largest city of ukraine, which is north of here. just a couple of days ago. and then, we were shelled in earnest, and we heard the sort of attack of like antiaircraft fire. and then, we really felt like we had to leave. but here it s been mostly peaceful, and we went out, walking around. we went to go see like a donation center where ordinary citizens, people who are concerned, people who are patriotic we are giving things like food, medicine, supplies, not the kind of thing that would necessarily tip the balance on a battlefield, but it really, you got the sense of a wholesome, you know, full-throated support and solidarity for the people who are fighting on the front lines. and then in the midst of the scene, we just heard an air raid siren. and everybody scattered. it was really heartbreaking. we could see tears in the eyes of the people who are running away. and this is something that you could see repeated across the country, in cities throughout ukraine. and it really was
dispute over the airspace and fighter jets because there is pressure from congress, a lot of experts but not so much former military because what the military is saying that is to get those migs there, first all of, you have to disassemble and then reassemble them. to fly them there, they would be subject to antiaircraft fire. and to create a fly zone, you have to attack russian russia proper and get rid of their sam 400s or belarus. so, it directly engages the u.s. and nato in a war with russia. where do you stand on this? so, andrea, first, what has just happened in congress is that the house has passed a $13.6 billion assistance package for ukraine. half of that is humanitarian.
