claiming responsibility for these. these are russia let me get this right. anti-putin russians allied with ukraine who are claiming responsibility. how does this detail complicate russia s response at all? yeah, well, victor, good morning. it is complicated because the ukrainians are denying it. these are proxy forces for the ukrainians. they may or may not be operating with some from kyiv and if russia wants to respond to them if they attack the ukrainians, then they are not really attacking the people that allegedly attacked them. so this is, you know, this is one of those areas where it s a gray zone in warfare where there are a lot of things that are done by forces other than the principal forces and have their own interests. so those people, you know, in these various anti-putin groups could do things that are
about their actual involvement in all of this. on the face of it, they say that it s anti-putin russian fighter who is normally fight on the side of ukraine here in ukraine. however, when they conduct actions inside russia, they do that independently. the ukrainians say. now, these groups themselves have also said that they are behind. some of these cross-border attacks and some of these cross-border shellings that have been taking place. and those have been pretty significant. one of the things you re pointing out, several regions in that belgorod region of western russia, it s a pretty big area and a pretty wide area where this cross-border shelling is taking place. one of the places that s become an especpicenter is a small tow close to belgorod city itself. what we re hearing today, shelling has been going on over the past couple of days. the authorities there are saying that several people have been injured, several people have been killed. but on the whole, what is clear, russia
territory, at least eight people have been injured and hundreds evacuated from what are now front line villages in russia. the original sin of russia s invasion of ukraine compounded as it is by their continued targeting of civilians, the absolute brutality of their occupation has ceded ukraine a unavailable position on the moral high ground. they have to hold on to that even as they prosecute their own campaigns inside russian territory. a massive attack is ongoing. the lives of local people primarily in nearby villages are in danger. anti-putin russians and ukraine forces claim to have raided his province a second time and broadcast these warnings. translator: stay in your homes. don t worry. soldiers of the russian volunteer corps are not at war with civilians. reporter: they claim to have hit russian ammunition dumps and
a burst of fire that took place earlier today in that place that was subject to that strike and obviously, a lot of folks there are calling on the russian authorities to do something to keep them safer which in itself is a big problem for the kremlin. the damage there does seem to be pretty extensive in the belgorod region, and it is one that has been targeted repeatedly over the past couple of days and the past couple of weeks. you ll recall, kate, that a week ago there was a cross-border raid by anti-putin russians who normally fight on the side of ukraine and they said we re acting independently who went across that border and held territory there for a while and the same with the refinery attacks. you can see the sort of area that this covers is pretty large. one of the other things that we re paying attention to which was interesting is the russians have now bombed a road close to the border with ukraine that it shows pretty nervous on the part of the russians, kate. i want to a
