Amy Klobuchar pulled together three moms on Mother s Day to urge people to get COVID-19 vaccines. One mom, Josi Hellier of Lakeville, spoke of challenges that can arise even when things seem on track. Her second-grade daughter Betty and kindergartner Annie returned to school at Oak Hills Elementary only to be quarantined for a total of 5 ½ weeks, in Betty s case after COVID cases were reported on their bus and at school.

Teachers have been selected and curriculum and lesson plans are to be written this summer, according to an update provided to school board members on Tuesday. The board still must sign off on the Critical Ethnic Studies requirement, with a vote expected by year s end. The move would fulfill requests made in recent years by a student advisory board and by members of the Asian community the district s largest demographic group.

She was president of the St. Paul Urban League, the place to go if you were Black and needed to develop job skills or help to pay the rent. Willie Mae retired in 2004 but fought to protect the Urban League s legacy until she died March 29 of heart failure at age 79 15 months after her husband s death. They worked well as a team, son Bert said last week. Willie Mae was the pragmatist and Bill more of a dreamer. Bert would spend weekends with his mother at her Selby Avenue office and came to understand the importance of her work and the connections she fostered there.

Someone later placed stickers on the building with swastikas and the words, We are everywhere, leaving Aundrea Atkinson, a junior who spoke at the March 29 protest, to suspect the incidents were related. The Centennial district says it is committed to equity and to listening to students. But some at the school still feel hurt, angry and ignored, and they ve stepped up publicly to have their voices heard.
