‘Colette’ wins Oscar for best documentary short. Watch the film from N.J. director.

The film’s director, Anthony Giacchino, grew up in Edgewater Park, Burlington County.
He found 90-year-old Colette Marin-Catherine when he was in France scouting out another project.
Giacchino, accepting the award, noted that her (93rd) birthday falls on the Oscars.
Marin-Catherine’s brother, Jean-Pierre, died at the German Mittelbau-Dora concentration camp after he was arrested as a member of the French Resistance when he was 17.
The Nazis forced Jean-Pierre into slave labor, ordering him to spend entire days in an underground tunnel making bombs for the Germans. He died in 1945, three weeks before Americans liberated the camp.

Octopus Teacher took home the best documentary feature award at the 2021 Oscars, held tonight (April 25) at the Union Station Los Angeles and the Dolby Theatre at the Hollywood and Highland Center.
The film documents a year spent by filmmaker Craig Foster as he forged a relationship with a wild common octopus in a South African kelp forest.
“Thank you to the Academy and thank you to all of our incredible nominees who spent so many years, and I presume a lot of tears, making beautiful important films, and bringing them into the world,” Elrich said. “I know there are many South Africans who are awake in the middle of the night to watch the ceremony. And in many ways, this really is a tiny personal story that played out in a sea forest at the very tip of Africa. But on a more universal level. I hope that provided a glimpse of a different kind of relationship between human beings and the natural world.”
“Colette,” from the social giant’s Oculus VR group and EA’s Respawn Entertainment, picked up the trophy for documentary short subject Sunday at the 93rd Academy Awards.

Colette triumphed at the 93rd Academy Awards, winning the ‘Best Documentary, Short Subject’ category at a ceremony held in Los Angeles, California (Sunday 25 April).
Colette is the first Guardian documentary to win an Oscar, building on the success of
Colette’s executive producers for the Guardian were Charlie Phillips, Lindsay Poulton and Jess Gormley.
