Several times during his career, John Owings has prepared and performed the complete cycle of 32 Beethoven piano sonatas. For his first concert engagement post-lockdown, Owings seized on precisely the right one for the occasion. The Piano Sonata No. 31 in A-flat major, Opus 110, is a musical depiction of Beethoven’s own health traumas and his return to vitality. Its restorative powers are a perfect fit for a zeitgeist that sees a society ravaged by COVID-19 start to thrive again after weathering heavy losses. Owings performs a recital May 30 as part of the Crystal Valley Concert Series in Middlebury. The concert, which will be streamed online, also will have a limited in-person audience.
