The Kenyan police authorities have reportedly indicted a notorious police officer identified as Diba, who alongside other colleagues had been accused of extortions, abduction and enforced disappearance of foreign nationals in the country. Diba with other rogue officers had reportedly extorted $850 from a Nigerian and some had their passports stolen. He was accused of planting drugs in the apartments of their victims after abduction to extort huge amount of money from them. If they refused, the person would be jailed and deported.
The Kenya President, William Ruto has disbanded the Special Service Unit of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) which was alleged to have been behind several cases of extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances of both citizens and foreign nationals. SaharaReporters earlier reported that some Nigerian nationals living in Kenya had disappeared without any trace in the East African country while some were extrajudicially killed by operatives of DCI in the country.
The Nigerian High Commissioner in Nairobi, Kenya, Ambassador Alhaji Yusuf Yunusa has reportedly barred a Nigerian resident in the East African country, Anthony Anamonye, from entering the commission. SaharaReporters reliably gathered on Friday that the decision was sequel to reports published by SaharaReporters on passport racketeering and extortion by officials of the high commission.
One of the justifications Kenyan police officers give for assaulting Nigerians in their country is that Nigeria Police treat Nigerians worse, Nigerians in Kenya have told SaharaReporters. SaharaReporters learnt some Kenyan police officers go as far as making reference to the harsh treatment of protesters during the #EndSARS protests of October 2020, when some protesters were killed across the country and several others were injured. Many protesters were also arrested and detained, with some still languishing in detention almost two years after.
Nigerians have accused some staff of the country's High Commission in Nairobi, Kenya, of conniving with the Kenyan police, to extort nationals living in the East African country. Kenya police has several times been accused of extorting foreigners and subjecting them to inhumane treatment in violation of international human rights treaties.
