CITY OF NEWBURGH - Anthony Grice could make history if he is successful in his campaign to become Orange County clerk.
Grice, a 53-year-old Newburgh city councilman, would be the first African-American to hold that position. The office has seen 37 clerks since it was established in 1702.
But that s not what he wants voters to focus on. That s important. That s significant, Grice said. At the same time, I do not want people to vote for me just because I m the Black guy.
He hopes voters focus more on his skills, his vision for the office and ideas for programs.
Grice officially announced his intention to run as a Democrat for county clerk on Feb. 12. Grice s wife, who owns a small business in Newburgh, and three sons are deeply involved in what he calls his grassroots campaign.

Former New York Senator Jet Metzger who represented New York s 42nd District, which includes all of Sullivan County, and parts of Orange, Ulster, and Delaware Counties alleges Assemblyman Colin Schmitt of the 99th NYS Assembly District sent Trump supporters to Washington D.C. on Wednesday to protest the election results. A Facebook group made up of Orange County Democrats made the same allegation.
On Wednesday. Schmitt was sworn into his second term in the State Assembly by Orange County Clerk Annie Rabbitt during a virtual ceremony that occurred at his Washingtonville District Office. The Republican later released the following statement denying the allegations.
