Ms. Harris said the school received a petition asking for Mr. Cole’s honorary degree, awarded in 2016, to be revoked in response to his objection to certifying the election results. She said the board of trustees was prepared to review the matter but said he offered to give up the honorary degree the next day. “On Monday, Rep. Cole contacted my office to request a meeting,” she wrote. “On Tuesday afternoon, Rep. Cole called me and voluntarily relinquished his honorary degree. The College affirms that Rep. Cole no longer holds an honorary degree from Grinnell College.” Mr. Cole, who graduated from the college in 1971, has described Jan. 6 as “the darkest day” of his career in Congress, after a mob of Trump supporters who falsely believe the president won reelection stormed the Capitol building and temporarily halted the certification process.
