Many in Sussex County are mourning the loss of Phillip C. Showell Elementary School constable and former police chief Floyd Toomey.
Toomey suffered a medical event while at work Wednesday, March 10. A post on the town of Dagsboro Facebook page said he had suffered multiple strokes and was flown to Christiana Hospital to undergo testing.
He was unable to recover and died March 14.
Toomey became a constable at Showell Elementary in Selbyville in 2019.
“Mr. Toomey rendered a great service to our district by giving parents the peace of mind that their children were safe while on school grounds. We are deeply saddened by his passing, which leaves a huge void in the PCS community, said Indian River School District Superintendent Jay Owens.
