Local and national restrictions in England reduced contacts in small and varied ways

E-Mail The imposition of various local and national restrictions in England during the summer and autumn of 2020 gradually reduced contacts between people, but these changes were smaller and more varied than during the lockdown in March, according to a study published in the open access journal BMC Medicine. A team of researchers at London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), UK combined data from the English participants of the UK CoMix survey and information on local and national restrictions from Gov.uk collected between August 31st and December 7th 2020. CoMix is an online survey asking individuals to record details of their direct contacts in the day prior to the survey.

Absence of supporters during football matches associated with fewer altercations on pitch

E-Mail Players, staff and officials engaged in shorter and less extensive emotional behaviour and interactions, such as arguments and discussions in games played during the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic, when supporters were absent. The findings are presented in a case study of 20 FC Redbull Salzburg championship group games published in Humanities and Social Sciences Communications. Michael Leitner, the first author of the study said: During the COVID-19 pandemic the Austrian Bundesliga - like many other European football leagues - resumed the season around the end of May 2020 without supporters in the stadiums. These so-called ghost games represent a unique and unprecedented opportunity to study the effects of (missing) audiences on the behaviour and experience of sports professionals.

Drinking water in several Chinese cities contains high levels of persistent chemicals

E-Mail The press release was updated on 18th January 2021 to provide some clarification on the numbers. Drinking water in several cities and regions in China contains high levels of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), according to a study published in Environmental Sciences Europe. The findings, from a team of researchers at Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, suggest that elimination of these chemicals from drinking water in affected cities and regions in China is urgently needed and that PFAS released from industries and other sources need better control and reduction. PFASs are a group of chemicals used to make coatings and products that resist heat, oil, stains, and grease, such as clothing, adhesives, food packaging, and heat-resistant non-stick cooking surfaces. They are highly durable and the widespread presence of PFASs in the environment and related exposures and adverse health effects such as impaired lipid metabolism, thyroid hormone levels and t
