WASHINGTON The largest U.S. environmental group has honored Britain s Prince Philip for his worldwide crusading on behalf of conservation causes.
Philip, 62, visiting Washington as president of the World Wildlife Fund, received the International Conservation Award Monday from the 4 million-member National Wildlife Federation.
Advertisement As somebody who spends so much time handing out awards rather than receiving them, it s nice to be on the other side for a change, Philip quipped to a crowd of about 100 people at a reception in his honor.
Among those attending the gathering was Anne Burford, former Environmental Protection Agency administrator, who was forced out of office more than a year ago with the agency engulfed in controversy over allegations of mismanagment, lax enforcement of pollution laws and sweetheart deals with corporate polluters.
