Bidayuh ring ladies get their own mural

KUCHING: A new mural featuring Sarawak s last Bidayuh “ring ladies” is set to become a tourist attraction at Kota Padawan here. State Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the mural depicted five “ring ladies” with their “ruyang” and “rasung”, the coiled copper rings worn on the forearms and calves, as well as their traditional headgear, necklaces, red sashes, belts and sarong. “The ruyang and rasung embody the distinctive culture of the Bemban, a Bidayuh sub-tribe from Ulu Bengoh. “The rings are traditionally considered majestic to Bidayuh ladies, who put them on at a young age and which become part of their daily dress, ” he said at the launch of the mural by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg in conjunction with the Padawan Municipal Council s 24th-anniversary celebration on Monday (Dec 14).
