AMID allegations of sell-outs, underhanded activity, exaggeration and emotional rhetoric, Offaly councillors voted by the narrowest of margins against a proposal to exclude Lemanaghan Bog entirely from an area in the county where wind farms may be permitted.
Instead of adopting a motion from Cllr Ken Smollen for Lemanaghan s outright exclusion, the council opted by nine votes to eight to pass an amendment tabled by Cllr Frank Moran which seeks to create a turbine-free zone at least 700m wide around the monastic site founded by St Manchan.

THE long-awaited 38-unit social housing project for Raheen in Clara got the go-ahead from the County Council on Monday.
Councillors warmly welcomed the scheme, saying its mix of housing types will help take some of the pressure off the public housing waiting list.
Disappointment was expressed however, at the failure of the plan to include a sewerage scheme link for existing residents and the absence of a roundabout at the entrance.
Housing officer John Cunningham said the Raheen development is the largest of its type outside Tullamore in over 30 years.

Last Friday was a happy day for 27 families as they received keys to their new A-rated, contemporary homes in Edenderry.
All 27 homes are located at Killane Court, Edenderry, and were allocated by Tuath Housing, to people from the Offaly County Council housing waiting list. Tuath is delighted to have worked in partnership with the Council on this Tuath led direct build development consisting of 22 three-bed houses and 5 two-bed houses. These new homes have been funded via private finance from the Housing Finance Agency and a loan from the Department of Housing, a statement from Tuath read.
