Chapels and churches almost everywhere serve purposes beyond ministering to the faithful. That’s particularly true in Vail, where one chapel serves many congregations.
Almost since the doors opened in 1969, the chapel has served as a community center for meetings and events, from concerts to weddings to meetings of various 12-step groups. The chapel also serves as a haven for travelers stranded when Interstate 70 is closed over Vail Pass.
When work starts in April of 2021 on putting a new roof on the chapel and repaving the parking lot the first part of a $10 million capital campaign that work will be done around the myriad community groups that use the chapel.

Joe Stuyvesant, executive director of Navy Region of the Southwest, has been named president and CEO of the San Diego Unified Port District.
Monday, Port of San Diego Commissioners voted unanimously in favor of Stuyvesant during closed session. The board is expected to approve Stuyvesant’s five-year contract at the Jan. 19 meeting and he is anticipated to start on Feb. 1.
Stuyvesant, who will receive a salary of $325,000, joins the agency after decades with the United States Navy in top military and civilian posts, including his most recent role overseeing administrative operations of Navy bases in California and Nevada. The defense executive, for instance, supervised the building of the Navy’s long-awaited new headquarters, Navy Building One, at 750 Pacific Highway. Previously, he served in the Navy for 30 years, primarily as a naval aviator.

The Port of San Diego’s long-running agreements for outsourced police and fire service within the district last week escalated from a routine matter of business to a charged discussion about fairness and the agency’s role in scrutinizing costs.
At the Dec. 8 board meeting, the port’s seven appointed commissioners were asked to approve 40-year emergency service contracts, known as municipal service agreements, with the cities of Chula Vista and Imperial Beach. But after nearly two hours of deliberation, with the central debate relating to whether the port was in a position to act on the unprecedented contracts, the items were pushed for additional review to the next scheduled meeting.
