Letter: Writer s take on history in schools was inaccurate Evansville Courier & Press
The Founding Fathers and 240-plus years of U.S. history are covered at great length in Indiana and Evansville’s K-12 schools. Let’s be clear about that.
Marlin Beck’s letter to the editor January 31, 2021, made a few good points. The first sentence, however, was not true and ill-informed. Beck wrote that “American school children today learn only two things about Thomas Jefferson: that he wrote the Declaration of Independence and that he was a slaveholder.”
This is not true. Elementary and high school students receive 13 years of coursework. American History is covered in an array of depths, through a myriad of courses, and from various vantage points in those years, plus in extracurricular clubs and academic team competitions. I know this because I have been in the rooms where it happens, and volunteer for many academic school-based programs.
