Helen Ann Dolan, who led a life committed to philanthropic endeavors that benefitted her community and the world at large, died on Aug. 19 of natural causes at 96.
When the musical Ragtime was produced for Broadway in 1998 it was a colossal, big-budget show. It cost some ten million dollars. What in the world were the folks at tiny little Union Avenue Opera thinking when they decided to include this show in their twenty-ninth season? Ragtime, the musical treatment of E. L. Doctorow’s vast rambling nostalgic, wonderfully American novel, is far removed from opera.
Dolan and her husband, Cablevision founder Charles Dolan, are long-time supporters of research and educational institutions on Long Island and beyond. They were married for 73 years. They have six children, 22 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
