Good morning and welcome to the washington journal. We want to hear from federal workers as well. Send us a tweet or go to facebook or email us. Well begin this morning with peter bakers piece on the front page of the New York Times, his News Analysis that the confidence ebbs at a steady drip. Two overseas wars president obama set out to restore societys faith in public institutions. Six years later, americans seem more dubious than ever that it really does. He goes on to point to the cdc. Heading into the last election that will directly influence his presidency, Michelle Obama remains near lowest Approval Ratings with handling of matters called into question by many voters. Only solace is that congress is held in even lower regard. Above that, peter baker reporting that now public esteem for the long respected centers for Disease Control has plummeted with the arrival of ebola on more than shores. New poll found that only 37 of americans thought the centers were doing a good job, dow
Discretion. Us in the interest of time and out of respect for all candidates, asked the Live Audience to refrain from clapping, sharing, or otherwise making noise with two exceptions. We welcome our candidates. [applause] thank you again for joining us. Good luck. Time is short, so lets get started. The first question will go to dr. Reeves. The department of justice has warned all School Districts they are required to educate all children regardless of immigration status. One estimate puts the cost in all 50 states and at least 760 milliont dollars. Should this be the cost of local School District or the federal government . I think the funding is coming from the federal government, and for thed be responsible federal government. Just take a look at the corridor of shame. President obama came down to South Carolina, and the corridor of shame refers to schools that have been neglected in rural areas. Children on free lunch or partial free lunch, and we turn that money down. That is what
Small businesses will have to lay off workers because of the cost of obamacare. At believe we should keep our tax dollars in South Carolina. It is insane for Governor Haley to send our own tax dollars to other states and to send the jobs that would be created if we kept our tax dollars here to other states. I do not care if the idea comes from a republican or democrat. If it helps tell carolina, i am worried. I did not support some things in the of ordinal care act, like the mandates for small business. But i support keeping our medicaid dollars here. In rural South Carolina where i live, right now our house little and chesterfield is slated to close down in if you must because Governor Haley is blocking their own medicaid tax dollars. What do we say to the people and chesterfield or marlborough or union whose hospitals are going bankrupt or closing down because Governor Haley is putting her own political career above the good of those communities . What do we say to the people, 300,00
She knew when she took office we had a crisis. She knew caseworkers had too many cases. They lied about the numbers they had on caseworkers. Get now . E suddenly they found the money to hire 120 new caseworkers. When we needed them . We could have saved so many lives. The same question please. I am a libertarian because i believe in small government. I believe government does have a role in our education, police and fire. We are being fined 1 million a year because we dont even have a childsupport Online Network system required by law. Years of this. We have a backlog on child fatalities. This is about prioritizing. Money tove plenty of the things we want by decriminalizing marijuana. Said workers are overworked and underpaid. We have the legislative branch, the executive branch. I will double the pay of everybody in the state of South Carolina. Want to be a republican and be broke, vote for them. I am trying to double the pay of our citizens. A young wife doesnt need to jobs. Wo or th
Adding more money for the agency. A federal judge said the primary problem is a budgetary shortfall more than anything else. My question is do you think you can fix it without adding more money . I actually supported the governors proposal, 30 million increase for dcf. Both for social workers, and for a variety of other pieces. I think there are management reforms that ought to be part of what happens there. I may proposals when the german oliver case broke earlier this year. In many respects dcf has a difficult and complicated job. They are dealing with some of the most troubled families in the commonwealth. The fact that they had an opportunity to move toward fixing this for years ago when childrens rights filed that case, which was a compelling case against the department, and the attorney general and governor chose not to move to fix it but to fight it, was a problem and borne out by what happened after. In addition to that, ive said this before, you have a terrific record with res
