TRAGEDY: RMS Titanic sank on this day in 1912 On this day in 1912, the finest ocean liner of its age foundered after striking an Iceberg only days into her maiden voyage. Many will know the story of RMS Titanic, however, not many will know that amongst the 1,317 on board the White Star Line ship on that fateful journey across the Atlantic, was a Carlisle native. Richard Charles Geddes was born in Carlisle, Cumbria, England in late-1880. He would sadly meet his end in the icy waters off Newfoundland after the Titanic slipped beneath the waves. Richard was the son of Richard Charles Geddes sr (1848-1894) and Ann Thomlinson (1846-1924), both Cumberland-natives who had married in Carlisle in 1872.
