Crookston Envirothon teams place 13th and 16th in state
Times Report
Two teams from Crookston High School competed at the Minnesota State Envirothon competition this spring.
The team of Ainsley Boucher, Anke Wiersma, Ava Lopez, Ella Weber and Zara Baig placed 13th in the state with a score of 103.67. Emily Balboa, Emily Funk, Halle Bruggeman, Linnea French and Madison Hoiland finished 16th, scoring 99.67 points.
The event, which was held virtually this year, is an academic competition that tests students’ knowledge of aquatics, forestry, soil and land use, wildlife and a current environmental topic that changes each year.
The current issue topic for 2021 was “Water Resource Management Local Solutions, Local Control.” Students were required to compose and present a 10-minute oral presentation related to the current events issue, and answer questions from a panel of judges.

Crookston High School art teacher Gary Stegman, who on doctor’s orders had to quarantine at home for 11 months and teach from home during that time, says CHS art students “outdistanced the competition in impressive fashion” at this spring’s virtual version of the Minnesota State High School League Region 8A Visual Arts Festival. (The virtual art show was held at Warroad High School.)
While CHS had a dozen entries rated as “Superior,” the second- and third-place schools had six and four pieces, respectively, ranked as Superior. Crookston also had one entry receive an “Excellence” rating, which is one notch below Superior.

Members of the Crookston High School Knowledge Bowl team, as all Pirate state participants do, walked the halls of the high school Friday morning lined by cheering students and staff while the school rouser played over the PA system.
But in an unusual twist, since the state meet is being held today in virtual fashion, as soon as their celebratory stroll was complete, team members adjourned to a conference room at CHS to begin the written round of the state meet.
The CHS team qualified for state by finishing fourth at the regional meet. Advised/coached by Katelyn Stegman, team members are Ella Weber, Ainsley Boucher, Anke Wiersma, Tatum Lubinski and Thor Harbott.
