âI was locked up for fifteen months,â the artist and illustrator Anita Kunz said, when reached in her native Toronto. âWhat else could I do but a painting a day?â When the coronavirus pandemic started, Kunz dug into a series of portraits of unsung women. âIt was easy to research. There are so many in every field,â she joked. She presented some of the finished drawings to the graphic designer Chip Kidd, who responded enthusiastically, helping her secure a book contract. By September of 2020, she had reached the number of drawings that the publisher, Pantheon, had set as the upper limit: a hundred and fifty. Since then, Kunz has painted âat least another hundred.â âTheyâre small, sixteen inches high at the most, and all the same size. Theyâre easy to pack in a box. I now have boxes of them,â she said. .-The Rockwell Center for American Visual Studies, the scholarly arm of Norman Rockwell Museum, announced a slate of speakers and topics for its annual symposium, Picturing Freedom: A Century of Illustration. For the second year in a row this event will happen virtually on Zoom over two days Friday, January 15 and Saturday, January 16. This timely symposium will explore historical and contemporary notions of freedom as well as the role of illustration as a force in shaping public perception. How has published imagery affected decision-making, public policy, and cultural understanding? Prominent authors, illustrators, and scholars will offer perspectives.
