Panama companies not acquired with intent, Tonna insists

Newsbook Media coverage ‘led to my company being shut down’ April 28, 2021 1:54 PM Nexia BT founder and managing partner Brian Tonna insisted that the Panama companies which ended up in the hands of Keith Schembri and Konrad Mizzi – as well as Egrant – had not been acquired with any specific intent in mind as he continued his testimony in front of Parliament’s Public Affairs Committee on Wednesday. In his third appearance in front of the committee with more to come, Tonna – currently out on bail after being charged with money laundering and other financial crimes – repeatedly insisted that the firm he had founded had been unfairly targeted by the media and elsewhere, leading to its closure.

Brian Tonna: I did not carry out due diligence on Electrogas power station bid

Brian Tonna told a parliamentary committee assessing the Electrogas deal that he did not carry out due diligence on its offer to build a power station, despite being involved in adjudicating bids for the public contract. The Nexia BT managing partner was replying to questions by parliament s Public Accounts Committee one week after refusing to answer questions before that same committee, claiming he may be a suspect in ongoing police investigations.  Tonna said his role and that of two other company employees was to “input data” during the fourth stage of the process, a financial evaluation that took several days to complete.
