Canada wants to adopt the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, under Bill C-15. Canada’s biggest problem is that Indigenous people are not in the room making that decision. Ironically, the core concept of UNDRIP is the concept of free, prior, and informed consent. It is concerning that the action plan is being developed behind closed doors with “key” Indigenous groups.
Grand Council Treaty #3 leadership must stand in opposition to relationship restructuring because our Anishinaabe governance structures will be further undermined in this process. I must note that my perspective of Canadian government relations flows from traditional knowledge as passed to me by my parents, grandparents and other elders in my life. Therefore, it is inappropriate that I, as a rights and titleholder from Wauzhushk Onigum First Nation, in Treaty 3 territory and connected to the greater Anishinaabe Nation am excluded from this process, as is other rights a
