The panel, headed by former Jammu and Kashmir High Court Chief Justice Gita Mittal, is learnt to have suggested that victims’ relatives should be directed to perform the last rites, failing which the Manipur government should do so instead.
In a statement last week, the Manipur police disclosed that 96 bodies continue to remain unclaimed in the morgues. Since the police have placed the number of those killed at 175, this suggests that more than half of the dead are yet to be put to rest.
The facility, which was opened on May 21, has hosted 79 women, who were brought there from different relief camps around the state. It has seen the birth of 32 children – 16 girls and 16 boys.
